No summer is complete without a few batches of homemade Spicy Crusted fried okra, dredged in flour and fried until golden. These fried nuggets with hints of green peeping through are so delicious, there’s no need to add anything to them except a light dusting of salt.
On social media, I asked my followers what food they just could NOT come to like no matter how many times they tried it. Okra was one that was mentioned a couple of times. It had me thinking, when was the last time I cooked with okra? Well, it has been a very long time since I had fried okra and I have never cooked with it (so that answers that question).
When I was younger, I remember my Auntie Charlotte filling her large 12 person table; filled with ole’ country foods. Fried okra was one of those foods. I remember turning my nose up to just because I was kid. In recent months, I decided to take on the challenge of using this vegetable and cooking it up with a twist and one of my favorite kitchen items; the air-fryer!
After creating this recipe in a heathier version, of course. I decided this is on the list of veggies to grow in my garden next year. Even though these points are more than enough reason for why we should start to eat this nutritious food, cooking it in the air-fryer helps to add a healthy twist to it. No oil!! We all know deep fried foods can be hard on us if not cooked with the proper ingredients.
REASONS TO EAT OKRA:
- It’s a nutritious food.
- It’s rich in magnesium.
- Full of fiber.
- Packed with antioxidants.
- Full of vitamin C.
- Known to benefit pregnant women.
- Helps with blood sugar control.
HOW TO PICK OKRA:
When selecting okra, always choose smaller pods that are uniformly green. They develop black specks when they are not fresh. Larger okra pods (more than about 3 to 4 inches in length), get a little fibrous and tough.

Notes
Anytime I cook anything in the air-fryer I like to shake or flip whatever I may be cooking. This helps to make sure things do not burn and are cooked evenly.
We try to stay away from dairy as much as possible so I create a lot of meals with nutritional yeast. If you do not have any issue with dairy, this recipe is just as good using grated parmesan.
