If you’ve never made tortillas from scratch, you’re in for a treat!
There’s something deeply satisfying about kneading a simple dough, rolling it out, and hearing that soft sizzle as it puffs up on the skillet. Not only do homemade tortillas taste far better than store-bought, but they’re also free from preservatives, gums, and unnecessary additives that can sneak into packaged options.
These soft, flexible tortillas are made with only a handful of pantry staples — perfect for tacos, wraps, quesadillas, or simply tearing into warm with butter (trust me, that last one is worth it).
And because they’re made with clean, whole ingredients, they’re easier on your gut and better for blood sugar balance than many store brands.

Homemade Tortilla Recipe
Ingredients:
-
2 cups unbleached Bread flour (or Bread + half whole wheat for extra fiber)
-
½ tsp sea salt
-
3 Tbsp avocado oil or olive oil
-
¾ cup warm water (may need a bit more or less depending on flour)
Instructions:
-
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. -
Add the Oil
Pour in the oil and mix with a fork until the mixture looks crumbly. -
Add Water & Knead
Gradually add warm water, mixing until the dough comes together. Turn it onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 2–3 minutes until smooth. -
Rest the Dough
Cover with a towel and let the dough rest for at least 20 minutes. This step makes rolling much easier. -
Divide & Roll
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each ball into a thin circle (about 6–8 inches). -
Cook the Tortillas
Heat a dry skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Place one tortilla in the skillet and cook for 30–45 seconds per side, or until light golden spots appear. -
Serve & Enjoy
Keep tortillas wrapped in a towel to stay warm and soft until ready to serve.
Tips & Variations
-
Swap half the flour for spelt flour for a nutty flavor.
-
Add 1 tsp garlic powder or herbs for savory wraps.
-
Make a big batch and freeze — place parchment between tortillas and store in a freezer bag.
